Book: By Blood We Live ~ "Under St. Peter's" by Harry Turtledove (1/9)
By Blood We Live, edited by John Joseph Adams, is a collection of vampire short stories and novellas. I picked this selection preview free from Sony Reader Store ages ago. The authors are some of the top names in science fiction and horror. Various forms of vampires are found in cultures all over the world. The version most known in Western popular culture originated in 18th Century Eastern Europe. This collection addresses some of those stories and myths. Warning: some of my reviews could contain spoilers simply because they cannot be avoided.
Under St. Peter's by Harry Turtledove starts off the collection with a bang. Something is trapped below the Vatican, unable to die, not allowed freedom. All he has to pass the centuries are his memories until it is time for a new Pope.
An interesting take on ancient legends and beliefs. I truly enjoyed this story, but I can see some readers not being so pleased. Turtledove is a master storyteller, able to construct characters you understand with just a few well-chosen words. This is a strong start to the book and I'm eager to see what else Adams has chosen. 4 out of 5.
